Problem
According to President Scott Kirby, UA shrank 8% cumulatively during the previous five years (2012-2017), effectively surrendering market share to their rivals. Part of this loss was due to forecasting software, Orion, that consistently under-predicted how many people would show up for a flight.
Solution
Gemini was created to replace Orion. Orion would underestimate demand, the result of which is that the airline would sell more tickets at cheaper prices than it should have. Substituting Gemini’s projections improved United’s yields 2.2%, and passenger revenue 1.2% during testing in the final three months of 2017. Occording to Andrew Nocella, chief commercial officer, “The forecast is dramatically more accurate today than it’s ever been.”
My Role
I came on board the project two years into the process. Much of the UI had already been established, so I had to ensure that any elements that I used or created were consistent with the pattern.
My main focus was the user experience (UX) based on knowing the problem as stated by the stakeholders/product owners, business analysts, and user acceptance testing.
These are screenshots of an interaction document that I did to document the changes to a contextual menu. You can see acceptance criteria (AC) based on the business requirements on the right and the way I incorporated the design element hightlighted with a number.
